Overview

The Discipline of Chemistry at Shaanxi Normal University was founded in 1944. The School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering boasts two postdoctoral research  centers, namely Chemistry Research Center and Chemical Engineering & Technology Research Center, as well as two first-level doctoral degree authorization disciplines, namely Chemistry and Chemical Engineering & Technology, which are further divided into secondary disciplines including Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry and Physics, Chemical Biology, Chemical Technology, Applied Chemistry, Industrial Catalysis, and Materials Chemical Engineering. Additionally, the school offers three professional degree authorization programs in Subject Teaching (Chemistry), Science & Technology Education and Materials & Chemical Engineering.

Currently, the school offers 6 undergraduate programs and specializations, namely Chemistry (Government-funded Teacher Training Program), Chemistry (Excellent Teacher Program), Chemistry (Regular Teacher Training Program), Chemistry (Duxue Class), Chemistry (Innovative Experimental Class), and Applied Chemistry. Both the Chemistry and Applied Chemistry programs have been recognized as National First-Class Undergraduate Program Construction Sites. The Chemistry (teacher training) program has passed the Tier 3 certification for undergraduate chemistry teacher training programs in institutions of higher education by the Ministry of Education. The Chemistry program has been recognized as a National Characteristic Specialty and a Shaanxi Provincial Famous Brand Specialty. The school has established two teaching demonstration centers of national level (Chemistry Center and Chemistry Virtual Simulation Center) and one virtual teaching and research section for Ministry of Education’s chemistry teacher training programs in western universities. It also offers two national-level quality courses, namely Physical Chemistry and Instrumental Analysis (Bilingual), and five national-level first-class undergraduate courses, namely Physical Chemistry, Instrumental Analysis, Comprehensive Chemistry and Design Experiments, Virtual Simulation Experiment on the Synthesis of the anti-malaria drug Artemisinin, and Virtual Simulation Experiment on Comprehensive Chemistry of Artificial Photosynthesis for Clean Fuels. The Physical Chemistry teaching team has been recognized as a national-level teaching team. Among its graduates are two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, and more than 20 national-level high-caliber talents such as the recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.

The school has established the Key Laboratory of Applied Surface and Colloid Chemistry of Ministry of Education, the Shaanxi Provincial Research Center for Basic Disciplines (Surface and Interface Chemistry) and four Shaanxi provincial key laboratories including Shaanxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry for Life Science, Shaanxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Macromolecular Science, Shaanxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Syngas Conversion, Shaanxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Novel-concept Sensors and Molecular Materials. It also has two science and technology innovation teams of the Ministry of Education and eight key science and technology innovation teams of Shaanxi Province. In recent years, its faculty have published more than 2,600 academic papers in leading journals of the chemistry discipline such as Nat. Sustain., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Adv. Mater., Nat. Protoc., and Nat. Commun. and so on. More than 300 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and nine key national research and development projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology have been carried out by the research teams in the school. The school has been granted more than 800 authorized patents and has won over 80 scientific and technological awards at various levels. The awards include one first prize of technological invention and two second prizes of natural science of the Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Award for institutions of higher education by the Ministry of Education as well as five first prizes of Shaanxi Provincial Science and Technology Award.

In recent years, several scientific research achievements from the school have been successfully commercialized, which include the “Super-Sensitive Detection Device for Concealed Explosives (SRED) Technology” and the “Controlled-Release Membrane Preparation Technology for Lightweight, High-Strength Polymer Foam Materials” developed by the research team led by Academician Fang Yu, as well as the “Protein-Based Coating Interfacial Biomineralization Technology” and the “Protein-Based Adhesion and Immobilization Technology” developed by the research team led by Professor Yang Peng.

The school has established long-term friendly cooperation relationships with over ten universities and research institutions in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, and South Korea. It has established one base for Program of Introducing Talents for Disciplinary Innovation in Higher Education Institutions jointly supported by the Ministry of Education and the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, namely the Talent Introducing Base for the Innovation of Applied Surface and Colloid Chemistry. Besides, it has also established Shaanxi Provincial International Joint Research Center for Organometallic Catalytic Chemistry and Xi’an International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for Functional Fibers and Flexible Smart Textiles. Meanwhile, the school has forged substantive collaborations with internationally renowned scientists in the field of chemistry, continuously improving the internationalization level of its faculty and yielding remarkable results through international scientific research cooperation. By hosting and organizing international academic conferences and seminars, the school has enhanced its disciplinary influence. It has been named an outstanding unit for “International Year of Chemistry in China” by the Chinese Chemical Society.

In 2025, the chemistry discipline of Shaanxi Normal University entered the top 1‰ of ESI global rankings for the first time, marking a new breakthrough in the construction of the discipline. Standing at this new historical starting point, the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering will remain committed to fostering virtue through education, elevating the school’s competitiveness through academic excellence and dedicating itself to serving the nation through education by upholding the spirit of “Inclusiveness, Pragmatism, Innovation, and Excellence”. With a broader vision, a more open stance and more persistent efforts, the school will promote the all-round development of the chemistry discipline at Shaanxi Normal University and contribute new strength to basic chemistry education, scientific research as well as economic and social development in China, especially in the western regions, thus crafting a glorious chapter by the chemists of Shaanxi Normal University in the new era.
